Friday August 7

Hemmed and hawed over the plan for the day.....I wasn’t sure weather I should give up the campsite and drive the fabled “Going to the Sun Road” myself or leave the truck here and take a bus up the road and back. My truck with the camper barely (and I mean barely) was short enough to even be allowed on the road. There were two areas I wanted to see in the park and the other, called Many Glaciers, known for its frequent grizzly bear sightings, was at the other end of this long road. If I was to take the bus I’d have to ride it all the way back to the camper, get in the truck the next morning and drive 3 plus hours outside the park to the other side to visit this other section. After another encounter with confused rangers at the visitor’s center I decided to drive my own truck. I was glad I did because the driving was a piece of cake.

“Going to the Sun Road” was wonderful. It rose in elevation from Lake MacDonald which had a very classic national park type lodge at it, to high in the sky....The road was steep and twisty but the views were spectacular. At the top were some mountain goats and a visitor’s center. I ate some mac and cheese in the camper, took a nap for an hour, and drove down the other side of the mountains.

I took a tour of the lodge at Many Glaciers which concluded on the rear deck. There was a guy on the deck who had a grizzly bear in the sights of his scope so I managed to get some great looks. Did a little more driving and found another duo who had another grizz in their sights.....an even better look.

On the way out of the park I got a great look at a black bear 20 feet from the car.

Satisfied that I’d seen most of the “tourist” areas of Glacier I headed out, south, back to I-90..........headed to Oregon. The Wal-Mart I planned on sleeping at had a bowling alley nearby.....where the party raged on into the night as the locals blew off steam at the end of a work week.
